Strategy – Learning Or Execution

Strategy – Learning Or Execution

11 Jan 2018 | By Yolande Watts

What would happen if we started thinking about strategy as learning instead of execution? Would we recruit differently? Would we structure differently? Would we have different operating principles? Would we get better results?

There was high-energy, plenty of inspiration, focus and collaboration abound at our Phuel U Australian launch in September.
Two oversubscribed events took place first in Melbourne and then later in the month in Sydney. It was from our perspective, a wonderful success – laughter, learning and ah-ha moments all round. In case you missed out here’s an update on what happened.

The room was filled to the brim – in fact had space allowed we could have filled the room three times over.

One of our expert Phuel facilitators explored the question “How might we think about strategy as learning instead of execution?” by guiding the 20 participants through the famed Ideo “Design Thinking” model. This included focusing on five key concepts – Framing the Opportunity, Brainstorming, Harvesting your Idea, Prototyping, and Critiquing the Idea.

In true design thinking fashion the session was “biased toward action” so there was movement, action and 1001 post-it notes. And because Design Thinking is a proven and repeatable problem-solving protocol, people walked away with actionable insights and a process to take back to their workplace.

In addition to learning from the “Innovation Jam” session, attendees had the opportunity to connect and network with their contemporaries from across the corporate landscape including Cochlear, Nestle, Optus, Pfizer and Westpac.

The cross-fertilisation of people and ideas is a core reason for Phuel U’s existence.

We will continue to provide a regular forum where people can connect with their peers from a variety of industries as well as featuring experts that Phuel and WPP have exclusive access to in order to get a handle on today’s most pressing business challenges.

So make sure you keep an eye out for our next event as places get snapped up fast. We look forward to seeing you there!
